Short Story Analysis Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel...
Young Goodman Brown, by Nathaniel Hawthorne Introduction Hawthornes short story Young Goodman Brown is a tale of innocence lost. Set in New England during the Puritan era, the protagonist, Goodman Brown, goes for a walk in the woods one night and meets the devil who tells him. Evil is the nature of mankind. Evil must be your only happiness. Welcome again, to the communion of your race. According to Levin this story is a condemnation of the hypocrisy of the puritan ethic. The Salem witch trials along with the abusive treatment of Native Americans stands in stark contrast to the Christian faith they professed. More importantly it is the story of innocence lost. Discussion The story begins with Brown leaving his wife Faith to set out on a night journey through the wilderness. He soon meets a fellow who bears a considerable resemblance to him and looked to be able to be at ease in the presence of kings or commoners. But the only thing about him, that could be fixed upon as remarkable, was his staff, which bore the likeness of a great snake, so curiously wrought, that it might almost be seen to twist and wriggle itself like a serpent. This man is the embodiment of evil, or the devil. Zhu points out that Hawthornes use of the names Goodman and Faith immediately identify their roles in the story by suggesting associations. By joining the name Goodman with the adjective young Hawthorne is alluding to the innocence of the man and his lack of worldly experience. Descartes, a philosopher, mathematician and scientist, was a fundamental player in the scientific revolution, which influenced his perspectives on the question of self. His principle tenant, the famously quoted, ââ¬Å"Cogito, ergo sum ââ¬â I think, therefore I am,â⬠reflects his core belief of thinking and of self-awareness as key to personal identity. Descartes was strongly influenced by Plato and Augustine. Descartes philosophical underpinnings can be understood as an extension of Plato and Augustineââ¬â¢s dualistic view in which, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦body and soul remain irreconcibily divided, two radically different entities with diverging fates: the body to die, the soul to live eternally in a transcendent realm of Truth and Beautyâ⬠(Descartes 99). Descartes felt he was, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦able clearly and distinctly to conceive one thing apart from another, in order to be certain that the one is different from the other, seeing they may at least be able to exist separately â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Descartes 106). Descartes argued that mind is completely different from body and it is possible for one to exist without the other. For Descartes, the self is largely defined by the mind, which is immortal and independent from the body. Watching ââ¬Å"Martha, Inc. : The Story of Martha Stewartâ⬠finally made me realize what the whole scandal of Martha Stewart was all about. From what I learned, Martha Stewart, known as a television personality and famous multimillionaire, was ââ¬Å"indicted on securities fraud, obstruction of justice and conspiracy charges in an insider trading scandalâ⬠. We will write a custom essay sample on Insider Trading Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Before this all started, she was happily baking cookies for children and making homemade arts and crafts for her friends. At the middle of 2003, she was sent for a five month term of prison. Insider trading was the crime Martha Stewart committed; she basically wanted to get ahead as CEO of her company. By definition, insider training is ââ¬Å"the illegal practice of trading on the stock exchange to oneââ¬â¢s advantage through having access to confidential informationâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Insider tradingâ⬠is a term that most investors would usually associate with illegal conduct. Illegal insider trading ââ¬Å"refers to buying or selling a security while in possession of nonpublic information about the securityâ⬠. Apparently, based on articles I have read, Martha Stewart was told by her friend Sam Waksal that his company ImCloneââ¬â¢s cancer drug had been rejected by the Food and Drug Administration before this information was made public. Because of this, the price of his companyââ¬â¢s stock diminished quickly. ââ¬Å"The (Securities and Exchange Commission) SECââ¬â¢s job is to make sure that all investors are making decisions based on the same information. Insider trading can be illegal because it destroys this level playing field. Insider trading is only illegal when a person bases their trade of stocks in a public company on information that the public does not know. â⬠Clearly, Martha Stewart was a huge symbol of corporate greed. She wanted more money even when she had reached one billion dollars as her net worth. Stewart had lost about $400 million ââ¬Å"because of the companyââ¬â¢s declining value, legal fees and lost business opportunitiesâ⬠. To make a comeback, she made a camp again in 2005 which led to profits a year later. Stewart then rejoined the board of directors and became chairman of her namesake company again this year. She hasnââ¬â¢t reached her full potential from before but is still catching up to it. (Sentences in quotes are from several Internet sources.
